School injury claims
Injury claims against Riverside County school districts
To seek compensation from a Riverside County public school district for a student's injury, you generally must present a written claim to the district within six months (Gov. Code § 911.2). The table lists every district's published filing office, claim form and contacts, with dashes where a district publishes nothing.
The six-month claim rule
A claim against a public school district or county office of education is a Government Claims Act claim. A claim for injury must be presented no later than six months after the incident (Gov. Code § 911.2), it must include the facts the law lists, such as the date, place and circumstances (Gov. Code § 910), and it is delivered to the entity as the law provides (Gov. Code § 915). If the claim is rejected in writing, the lawsuit generally must be filed within six months of that notice (Gov. Code § 945.6).
If the six months pass, a written application to present a late claim can be made within a reasonable time, but not more than one year after the incident (Gov. Code § 911.4). The entity must grant a timely application in listed situations, including when the injured person was a minor for the entire six-month period (Gov. Code § 911.6). That rule helps many injured students, but it has its own limits, so it is safest to file within six months.
Riverside County public school districts
The Riverside County Office of Education lists 23 public school districts in the county. For each one, the table shows what the district publishes on its own website about filing a claim for damages, with a link to the source. A dash means we could not find that detail on the district's official site when we checked; in that case, call the district office and ask where Government Claims Act claims are received. Many districts use their own claim form, and some return claims that are not on it. The main phone numbers come from the Riverside County Office of Education's district listing.

Which entity is responsible?
Name the public entity that runs the school. Most public schools belong to the local district in the table. Some programs, such as county-run alternative, court and community schools, are operated by the Riverside County Office of Education, listed last. Charter schools can be run by separate organizations, so check who operates the school. If a city street, sidewalk or park was involved, a claim may also be needed against the city or the County; see our claims guide.
What to put in the claim
- The student's name and a parent or guardian's contact information
- The date, time and exact place (school, room, field or bus stop)
- What happened and which employees were involved, if known
- The injuries and the amount claimed, with copies of bills
- Keep proof of the date you mailed or delivered it
