Dog bites and animal attacks

Animal control and dog bite reports in each Riverside County city

Last updated:

In Riverside County, the agency that takes a dog bite report depends on the city: the County Department of Animal Services under contract in many cities, Animal Friends of the Valleys in six southwest cities, or a city's own animal control. The table lists each city's provider and verified contact details.

Who takes the report depends on where the bite happened

Animal control in Riverside County is split among several providers. Many cities contract with the Riverside County Department of Animal Services for field and shelter services; the County Board of Supervisors approved new three-year agreements with most of them in late 2025. Six cities in southwest Riverside County contract with Animal Friends of the Valleys, a nonprofit shelter in Wildomar. Several cities, including Corona, Moreno Valley, Beaumont, Banning, Desert Hot Springs and Palm Springs, run their own animal control, often through the police department. Unincorporated areas are served by the County.

County contract services typically include bite investigations and quarantines. For example, a City of Indio staff report lists the County's services as including investigating reported bites and quarantining animals suspected to be rabid. [source]

What to have ready when you call

  • Where and when the bite happened, and the address where the dog lives if you know it.
  • The owner's name and contact details, and the dog's description.
  • Where you were treated, if you have already seen a doctor.
  • Photos of the wound and the dog, if you have them.

Ask for the report or case number and write it down. It is the easiest way to request the record later. The next page explains what the agency does with the dog after a report.
