Crash reports
How to get a crash report from the California Highway Patrol
The California Highway Patrol writes the reports for crashes it investigates, mainly on freeways and state highways and in unincorporated areas of Riverside County. Reports are requested with form CHP 190, online or from a CHP Area office. This page lists the verified process, fees and every CHP office in the county.
| How to request | In person or by mail to the nearest CHP Area office, using form CHP 190 [source] Any CHP office can get a copy of a CHP collision report or arrange to mail it to you. [source] |
|---|---|
| Online | A proper Party of Interest can request a CHP crash report online through the CHP Crash Portal (crashes.chp.ca.gov). [source] |
| Fee | $10 for 1-25 pages, $20 for 26-50, $30 for 51-75, $40 for 76-100, plus $10 for each additional 25 pages (or part) over 100. CHP says to contact the office that filed the report for the exact cost. [source] No handling or mailing charge. Pay by personal check or money order made out to the California Highway Patrol. No cash by mail; no credit or debit cards. [source] Credit and debit cards are not accepted, and cash should not be sent with mail requests. [source] The newer Request a Crash Report page gives no amounts and says to contact the Area office for the exact fee. [source] |
| Timing | The report is mailed after CHP verifies you are a party of interest and receives payment. No number of days is given. [source] |
| Who can request | The current CHP page lists these parties of interest: drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians, passengers, parents of minors, legal guardians, vehicle or property owners, legal representatives, manufacturer representatives, and insurers with a valid claim or policy number. [source] Attach a photocopy of your driver license or photo ID. If you have neither, the CHP 190 must be certified by a notary. [source] |
| Form | Form CHP 190, Application for Release of Information. The PDF shows revision 'Rev. 11-03' and has English and Spanish sides. [source] Instead of the CHP 190, you may send a personal letter. [source] |
| Coverage | CHP's historical focus is California's freeways and the highways in unincorporated areas. [source] CHP policy manual HPM 100.67, Chapter 3: the Department has primary jurisdiction for enforcing the Vehicle Code (CVC) in unincorporated areas of every county. The quote was taken from PDF text extraction, which garbles the spacing. [source] |
| Also note | CHP has copies only of collisions it investigated itself. It does not have reports from other police departments. [source] |
